Binaural Recordings

Our Ears Can Hear in 3-D! Close your eyes - you can tell where a sound is coming from. Left or right, up or down, near or far. Two ears and our amazing brain are enough to figure it out. But normal stereo recordings really only give us left and right. The reason is that normal stereo recordings are made without taking into account the shape of our head and ears. But binaural recordings do. Binaural recordings are often made by placing microphones inside the ears on a dummy head. These days, new highly efficient miniature microphones are small enough to actually place them inside a person’s ears!

My band and I made these recordings of our rehearsal with a set of binaural microphones in my husband Doug’s ears. Doug found the best spot in the room to perfectly hear what everyone was playing or singing. Close your eyes and you can tell where everyone is standing relative to each other. That’s Pat Bergeson on guitar, mandolin, harmonica and vocals, Charlie Chadwick on bass and vocals, Fred Carpenter on fiddle, mandolin and vocals, and me on guitar, jew’s harp and vocals. Listen to the “Welcome” recording to the left first to really hear what’s going on! You don’t need any special equipment to hear the 3-D sound, just a decent pair of headphones. The recordings will sound good through speakers too, but try the headphones!

The songs are from my new CD, American Folk Songbook. It’s a collection of 17 of my favorite American Folk Songs. I also did a hardcover book as a companion to the CD that includes stories about the songs along with illustrations, anecdotes and sheet music arrangements for vocal, guitar and piano.

I hope you enjoy these binaural recordings. I’ll put a new one up every week. Feel free to download and keep them to blow your friends’ minds!
